NDR "Backscatter" type of spam

There will always be opinions, both good and bad on how MagicSpam protection, rules and policies are used, and what the defaults should be. Different environments may have different needs. We try to find the perfect balance, and that is not always easy. Just remember that we have to satisfy millions of users.. not just one person.

NDR "Backscatter" type of spam

Post by magicspam » Wed Jan 14, 2015 6:02 pm

To help reduce NDR or "backscatter" type of spam, you can add the "backscatterer" RBL blacklist to MagicSpam under.

Settings / IP Reputation

Simply scroll down to RBL (Realtime Blackhole lists) and add the blocklist you wish to add.

Please note, the form must be: listname.listhost.tld.

For example:

ips.backscatterer.org

For more information on how to add the "backscatterer" RBL blocklist. Please visit the following website for more details.

http://www.backscatterer.org/

If you require additional support, please give us some sample log entries of those messages and send them to support@magicspam.com, and we can further assist you.

You can perform a MagicSpam log search right in the MagicSpam interface and then either take a screenshot or copy/paste the entries into the email.

In addition, we would recommend enabling or resetting the anti-spam options/rules to the "Recommended" settings. The rule "Block Mail Servers on Dynamic/Dial-up Addresse" is a very safe and effective anti-spam rule that you should enable on your server. Once the rule is enabled, you should see significant amounts of spam messages being
rejected.

Lastly, please check into any remote forwards or vacation auto-responder messages that are in use by your customers. These are part of the MTA functions and not controlled by MagicSpam.

Thanks!
