Reason why wildcards are not generally recommended

Post by mindwire » Thu Jun 28, 2018 8:53 pm

Hi, what is the reason for the following warning message, when adding to the whitelist or blacklist in WHM -> MagicSpam -> Settings -> Exemptions ?
WARNING: while '*' wildcards are supported, they are not generally recommended.
New entry added.
Is it because MagicSpam chews up more server resources processing comparing email addresses to wildcard entries,
or is it because you are whitelisting/blacklisting all email from an entire domain (i.e. Blacklisting *@gmail.com would probably not be a good idea)?

Hello mindwire,

Thank you for your post.

The reason for the wildcard warning notice is due to the fact that blocking entire domain brings inherent risks of blocking valid email messages from those domains. Also, one could block the entire .com or .net top level domains by accident, preventing their customers from receiving all emails coming from those top level domains.

We hope this answer your question.

Have a great day.
