Installation problem

Hi! I installed the product as written in the installation guide. The dialog ended with:
Installation complete! Your next
step is to point a web browser to:
https://mail:6244
to configure and enable!

But the Magicspam webserver did not start and if I try to start it manually, gives an error.

root@mail:~# ps axf | grep magicspam
21154 pts/1 S+ 0:00 | \_ grep magicspam
14605 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/share/magicspam/bin/magicspam-daemon
14606 ? Ss 0:00 magicspam-rate-limiter

root@mail:~# /etc/init.d/magicspam-httpd start
Starting magicspam-httpd ...Failed to start magicspam-httpd

This is Debian 7 with kernel 3.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64

Please help!

Thank you for your post.

If we understand correctly from your email, you are unable to access MagicSpam admin interface panel after a successful installation.

Can you please let us know if you have any firewall in place that would prevent you from connecting on port 6244?

Hello magicspam,

I have a firewall and opened port 6244.

The problem is NOT that I cannot access port 6244 on the server.
The problem is that the magicspam webserver does not start!

There is no documentation on the magicspam webserver. How can I find out why does the magicspam webserver gives error upon startup: "Failed to start magicspam-httpd"

Please help!

Hello Gabor,

Thank you for your reply and for clarifying your issue for us.

Could you please check to see if there is any logs in the /var/log/syslog that could point to this issue.

In addition could you please check that the port 6244 is not already used by some other process:

netstat -tnlp

In addition can you please fill us in on the following information about your platform:

- Plesk, cPanel, MailEnable, Zimbra or Postfix Standalone

- MTA (Qmail, Postfix, Exim)

- MagicSpam Version

Hello Magicspam,

I found the reason for the problem. Upon startup of magicspam-httpd in the startup script an "su magicspam" is done. But when installation created the magicspam user, the default shell was used, which is /bin/false. Therefore the startup script was unable to do the su.

Changed the shell for magicspam user and magicspam-httpd was able to start. It is working now.

Your instructions regarding firewall on port 6244 are misleading. This has nothing to do with service startup.

We are happy to hear that the issue with the magicspam-httpd service not starting has now been resolved.

We have looked into this issue further and escalate it with our development team.
